What Should Be Considered When Selecting An Industrial Chiller?

Industrial chillers are used to remove excess heat from equipment and applications so that the system can operate properly and reliably, like in the food, beverage, plastic, and printing industries.

Then, what should you consider to ensure that you select the right product?

① The refrigerants (read the previous article to know more about refrigerants) in the chiller are in a state of high temperature and high pressure after absorbing heat from a subject device, so the chiller needs to chill itself down (or to chill the refrigerants down). Probably firstly, you need to determine whether to choose a water-cooled one or an air-cooled one. Well, they are both chillers. The difference is that a water-cooled one uses water (from a water tower) to cool itself, and the air-cooled one uses fans just like air-conditioners.

· To build a water tower means much more area, but a water-cooled chiller is smaller than an air-cooled chiller.

· As the heat transfer efficiency of water is much greater than that of air, the cooling efficiency of the water-cooled chiller is higher than that of the air-cooled one. 

· Water-cooled chillers are less affected by the environment, but they need high-quality water to keep from corrosion.

· You have to consider where you live or which area the chillers work. If water freezes, you can only use air-cooled chillers.

② The second essential factor to consider is the type of evaporator of the chiller. The refrigerants in the evaporator absorb heat to produce cold water, then pumped to the subject device. Based on some principle of physics, the two structures that storage water of the chiller and the subject device, one should be open type (tank) the other should be closed type (shell and tube).

③ Determine the heat load of the subject device or the needed cooling capacity of the chiller. There is a formula that might help. 

Q(kcal/h)= W(kg/h)× c(kcal/kg·℃)× △t(℃)× S

Illustration(measured in one hour): Q is the excess heat, W is the weight of raw materials, c is the specific heat of raw  materials, △t is temperature difference, S is a safety coefficient ranging from 1.35 to 2.00.
