Both air-cooled and water-cooled chillers are industrial chillers. They all can provide cooling water at a certain temperature to a subject device to cool it down. They differ in the following points.
Appearance
A water-cooled chiller is much smaller than an air-cooled one when they are of the same specification. There are cooling fans built in an air-cooled chiller, while no fans in a water-cooled one.
Working principle
The working principle of a water-cooled and an air-cooled chiller is pretty much the same.
There are 4 main components in both water-cooled and air-cooled chillers. They are compressor, condenser, evaporator, and expansion valve. The difference of working principle between a water-cooled chiller and an air-cooled one lies in the evaporator where heat transfers from the chiller to the ambient environment. The heat from an air-cooled chiller was carried away by cooled air from cooling fans, while heat from a water-cooled chiller was carried away by cooled water from a cooling tower. Therefore, a water-cooled chiller needs to be connected with a cooling tower.
As heat exchange efficiency with water is better than with air, a water-cooled chiller has a better refrigeration effect than an air-cooled one of the same specification.
Installation and use
The installation and use of an air-cooled chiller and a water-cooled one are very convenient. The machine can be put into use after water and electricity are connected. It's better that the workshop of an air-cooled chiller is well ventilated and no case of powder. The condenser and the air inlet filter should be cleaned regularly. Water-cooled chillers are less affected by the environment.
