A water-cooled chiller typically consists of four main components: an evaporator, compressor, condenser, and expansion valve. The evaporator absorbs heat from the process or equipment being cooled by circulating chilled water through tubes that are in contact with the process. The compressor then compresses the refrigerant, which raises its temperature and pressure.
The hot high-pressure refrigerant then flows through the condenser, where it transfers heat to the water that is circulating through tubes in the condenser. The expansion valve then reduces the pressure of the refrigerant, which lowers its temperature and enables it to absorb heat from the process in the evaporator again.
Water-cooled chillers are typically more efficient than air-cooled chillers because they use water to dissipate heat from the refrigerant, they can also be used in areas where ambient temperatures are high. However, water-cooled chillers require a dedicated water source, such as a cooling tower, to supply and remove water from the system.
